About Key-Based Licensing System

Applies to TestLeft 15.40, last modified on March 17, 2022

This page is related to key-based licenses — a regular license type. For information on the new ID-based license type, see SmartBear ID-based Licenses.

Key-based license subtypes

SmartBear products use various license types. The most frequently used types are Node-Locked and Floating User:

Node-Locked License

The Node Locked license bounds TestLeft to one computer. You can run one TestLeft instance at a time only on that computer.

Note: Do not activate Node-Locked licenses on virtual or cloud computers. To run tests in virtual environments, you can use either the Floating User license or TestExecute. See the Using TestLeft on Virtual Machines and Running TestLeft Tests on Remote Computers articles.
Floating User License

The Floating User license lets you run several TestLeft copies on multiple computers in your company network. The number of copies that can work concurrently is determined by the license key.

You activate the license on one computer (License Manager PC) and then can install TestLeft on as many computers in your network as you need to.

For example, if you have a license key for two TestLeft floating users, you can install TestLeft on many computers in your network, but only two concurrent users will be able to work on tests with TestLeft at a time.

TestLeft licenses do not depend on TestComplete or TestExecute licenses, since these are different products.
TestLeft works on the computer where you create test code. TestExecute and TestComplete work on computers where your tested application resides.

Activating Licenses

Before you start using TestLeft (even the trial version), you need to activate its license.

Moving Licenses

Your license key is bound to a computer where you activate it. (For a Node Locked license, it is a computer where you install TestLeft, for a Floating User license, it is a computer where you install the License Manager.)

To move the license to another computer, you will have to deactivate your license key and then use a new license key to activate the license on a needed computer. See Deactivating and Moving Licenses. Make sure to activate license keys on appropriate computers.

License Expiration Date

A TestLeft license is a Subscription license. This means that the license is time-limited. It will expire in some time after the effective date specified in the contract. After the license expires, you can purchase a renewal. Shortly before your license expires, TestLeft will display a notification suggesting that you purchase a renewal.

License Manager

To activate and control licenses, TestLeft uses the Sentinel License Manager. It is installed automatically with TestLeft. To manage Floating User licenses, you can also install the standalone License Manager utility on a computer where TestLeft is not installed.
