Managing Components
Use drift component to see what is installed, add optional components, keep your installation up to date, and remove components you no longer need. To learn about core and optional components, see Drift Components.
See what is installed
drift component list
To also see components you can install:
drift component list --all
To see details for one component, including the files it installs:
drift component info kafka
Install an optional component
Install one or more components by name:
drift component install kafka drift component install grpc mcp --yes
Drift downloads each component from the current release and verifies its published checksum.
To install a specific version:
drift component install kafka --version <version>
Install a custom or prerelease plugin
You can install a plugin that is not part of a Drift release, such as one your team built. Provide the archive or .plugin file and its SHA-256 checksum:
drift component install --url https://example.com/my-plugin.tgz --sha256 <checksum> drift component install --file ./my-plugin.plugin --sha256 <checksum>
Drift requires a checksum so it only runs code you have verified. To install without one, add --force. Only do this for plugins from a source you trust.
Drift installs only executables and .plugin files from an archive. It never overwrites your drift.config.toml.
Update Drift
drift component update
This updates Drift to the latest release, including any optional components you have installed. To preview the changes first, add --dry-run. To update to a specific release, add --version <version>.
If an update fails, Drift restores every file it replaced, so your installation is left as it was.
Remove a component
drift component remove kafka
Removing a core component requires --force.
Work offline
drift component list --offline lists installed components without contacting the release server. In environments without internet access, download the component archive on another machine and install it with --file and --sha256.
