Message - The file name exceeds the limit set by the operating system. Test Visualizer cannot store data to this file.

Applies to TestComplete 15.73, last modified on March 04, 2025

The TestComplete Test Visualizer captures images of your tested application for operations performed during test recording and playback. These images, as well as other helper Test Visualizer files, are stored in the Visualizer\<TestName>_<TestExtension> subfolder of the folder containing your test. Here, TestName is the name of your test as you see it in the Project Explorer panel, and TestExtension is the extension of the test file on the disk (see Project and Project Suite Files for possible extension values).

In Windows, file paths are limited to 260 characters. So, if a test’s file path on the disk is very long, it may happen that the test’s Visualizer files, which have even a longer path, hit the path length limit. In this case, TestComplete cannot save Visualizer data for the test and displays a message informing you about the problem.

To resolve the problem, rename the problematic test to a shorter name or move it to a location with a shorter path so that the fully-qualified names of the test’s Visualizer files do not exceed 260 characters.
