Using TestExecute on Virtual Machines

Applies to TestExecute 15.40, last modified on March 25, 2022

This page is related to key-based licenses — a regular license type used in TestExecute 15.40. For information on the new ID-based license type, see SmartBear ID-based Licenses.

If you need to run automated tests in a virtual environment, use virtual computers as workstations where TestExecute is running, but do not activate your TestExecute licenses on virtual computers. We recommend that you use TestExecute on virtual computers as described below:

  • Select a physical computer that you will use as the License Manager PC.

Make sure that your virtual computers are connected to your local network and have access to the computer.

  • Activate your license on the physical computer.

  • Install your TestExecute instances on virtual computers.

This way, you will be able to --

  • Easily manage your licenses.

  • Create, configure, clone and delete virtual machines with TestExecute installed without any limitations.

Activating TestExecute Licenses on Virtual Computers

If you still need to activate your license on a virtual computer, consider the following:

The license activated on a virtual computer is bound to the virtual computer’s MAC address and to the host computer (the computer on which the virtual computer is currently running). If the virtual computer’s MAC address changes or if you move the virtual computer to another host computer, your license will be blocked and you will not be able to use it.

  • Move your license to a physical computer.
