This topic describes common tasks you can accomplish with user interface elements in the GUI Explorer window:
Exploring Application Layout
To see the general layout of an application’s controls, do the following:
- Locate the application’s main window in the object hierarchy and call GUI Explorer by clicking the GUI Explorer button on the Object Browser toolbar.
To explore a particular control, do any of the following:
- Locate the desired control in the object hierarchy and click the GUI Explorer button on the Object Browser toolbar to call the GUI Explorer window.

- Right-click the desired control in the general layout displayed by the GUI Explorer window and select Explore from the context menu.
Navigating Through User Interface Elements
To navigate through an interface level, use the Back and Forward buttons on the GUI Explorer toolbar.
Mapping Object Names
To add a name mapping record about an object, do the following:
- Right-click the user interface element corresponding to the desired object and select Map Object from the context menu.
- In the ensuing Object Name Mapping dialog specify name mapping info for the given object.
Locating Objects in Object Tree
To easily locate the selected object’s position in the hierarchical structure of processes and windows displayed in the Object Browser, right-click the desired user interface element and select Highlight in Object Tree from the context menu.
Viewing Hidden Controls
To view hidden controls, press the Display invisible controls button on the GUI Explorer toolbar.
The invisible controls are displayed in white.
Viewing Objects on Screen
To view hints that contain element screenshots, do the following:
- Use the Show Screenshot command on the GUI Explorer toolbar.
To view corresponding objects marked with a flashing red frame, do the following:
- Right-click the desired element and select from the context menu.
Note: | If you are going to highlight a web page element, set the page’s zoom ratio to 100%. Else, the test engine may fail to determine the element’s coordinates properly. See Preparing Web Browsers. |
