Using TestComplete in WAN

Applies to TestComplete 15.70, last modified on December 17, 2024

This page refers to key-based licenses — a legacy license type used in TestComplete until version 15.48. For information on the current, ID-based license type, see SmartBear ID-based Licenses.

TestComplete Floating User licenses can be used in a WAN. This lets you run TestComplete on your computer when you are working out of the office or share one TestComplete license among several offices of your company.

By default, TestComplete searches for the License Manager using broadcast messages. These message only work in local networks. So, the default search settings may cause problems if you want to use the same License Manager in different offices of your company.

There are two possible solutions for the problem. One is to modify the search settings on TestComplete workstations and specify the IP address of the License Manager PC. Another variant is to include all needed computers into a virtual private network. You can choose any of these variants.

Modifying the Search Settings

If your License Manager is not in the local network, you can alter the search settings on TestComplete workstations and specify the License Manager computer, to which TestComplete (or TestExecute) should connect:

  1. Assign a static external IP address to the License Manager PC. Please ask your network administrator for assistance, if needed. The static IP address is needed in order for TestComplete to be able to connect to the License Manager PC.

  2. On TestComplete workstations, modify the search settings and specify the License Manager PC using the static IP address. For detailed information on how to modify the search settings, see Specifying License Manager for Connection.

Organizing Virtual Private Networks

A possible alternative to specifying the static IP address is to include TestComplete workstations and the License Manager PC into the same Virtual Private Network (VPN). VPN means that all computers included in it work with each other as if they were included into the same local network.

If needed, ask your network administrator for assistance with creating a VPN.

Note that depending on VPN settings the broadcast requests may be ignored. In this case, you have to modify the search settings on TestComplete workstations and specify the License Manager PC using the name or network address that you use to connect to this PC in VPN.
