Licensing in Private Networks

Applies to TestComplete 15.63, last modified on April 23, 2024

This page refers to SmartBear ID-based licenses that we introduced from TestComplete 15.48 onwards.
For information on legacy key-based licenses, which are no longer being actively supported, see Key-Based Licenses.

About offline and online licenses

By default, TestComplete licenses are controlled by the SmartBear license servers available on the Web. TestComplete connects to these servers to check if a license is available or not.

If you are working in a private network, then, most likely, these license servers are not available to you, because these networks are typically locked from the global Web. To make it possible to use TestComplete in these networks, SmartBear offers a special license type – offline. Your license administrator can convert your Fixed User or Floating license to an offline one and then activate this license on the computer, where TestComplete is installed, or on the On-Premise License Server in your network. See the links below for detailed information.

The license type name – offline – indicates that the license is controlled by a server running in your private network. This is contrary to the default license type – online – which means the license is controlled by the SmartBear license server available online.

Tip: We’d suggest using online licenses whenever it’s possible. If you are working in a private network, try speaking with your network administrator to allow your computers to access the SmartBear license servers.

Activation of offline licenses

Notes

  • An offline license is bound to the computer on which you activate it:

    • A Fixed User offline license is bound to the user workstation.

    • A Floating offline license is bound to the On-Premise License Server.

To move and use the license on another computer, you need to deactivate it on the current one. See Free an Offline Fixed User License and Free an Offline Floating License.

  • If needed, your license administrator can convert your offline license back to an online one, so you can use the SmartBear license servers to control it.
