Upgrading Existing AQTime Pro Licenses

Applies to AQTime 8.81, last modified on January 18, 2022

If you have an AQTime 8 license and want to run more product instances, you may purchase the needed number of licenses as new licenses or as an upgrade of your existing license. There is an important difference between these approaches that concerns the way you manage the licenses. It is especially important if you are upgrading a Floating User license. This topic explains the difference and helps you choose the correct way to upgrade.

Upgrade or a New License?

If you have an AQTime license and want to use more product instances, you can either purchase a new license or add product instances to your existing license. Despite the fact that in both cases you will be able to use more product instances, there is an important difference between them.

If you purchase a new AQTime Pro license, you get a new license key. You cannot activate this key on your License Manager PC, if this PC already has another AQTime Pro license activated. If you activate the new license on it, the new activation data will overwrite existing data and the old license will be lost (see Using Multiple Licenses on One License Manager PC).

So, if you purchase a new license and get a new key, you will have to use a new License Manager PC for it. This approach may be considered as a disadvantage (depending of what you need). You will have to find and use another PC for license management in addition to the existing PC (or PCs) you are already using. Also, you may need to modify the search settings on AQTime workstations in order for them to connect to the correct License Manager.

The solution is to purchase an upgrade of your existing license, that is, to add new product instances to it so that it supports more instances. If you upgrade an existing license this way, you get a special upgrade file, which you then apply on your existing License Manager PC. That is, you do not have to find a new License Manager PC and you do not have to modify the search settings on AQTime workstations.

To avoid problems when using several License Manager PCs, we recommend that you purchase new instances as an upgrade, that is, add them to the existing licenses, when possible.

How Licenses Are Upgraded

  • Node-Locked licenses cannot be upgraded in the way described above. If you want to run more product instances, simply buy them as new licenses. Also, consider upgrading to a Floating User license for easier license management.

  • If you have a Floating User license of AQTime, you can upgrade your license and increase the number of AQTime instances controlled by the license.

Important: An upgrade of an existing license replaces your current license data with the upgraded data. That is, you cannot use both the existing and upgraded licenses. You can use only the upgraded (new) license.

Upgrade From Node-Locked to Floating User License

If you have a Node-Locked license and want to upgrade it to a Floating User license, contact the SmartBear Sales Team.

When upgrading from Node-Locked to Floating User, you may want to choose a computer to be used for license management and activate the license on it (strictly speaking, you may want to change the License Manger PC). In this case, you will have to move the license before or after the upgrade. See the Two Ways to Activate an Upgraded License section below.

Two Ways to Activate an Upgraded License

There are two ways to apply the upgraded license data:

  • You can apply the upgrade on the computer that has your current license activated (that is, you can apply the upgrade on the current License Manager PC).

-- or --

  • You can move the license to another PC and apply the upgraded license there (that is, you can combine the move and upgrade).

If you choose to upgrade your license on the existing License Manager PC, we will generate a new file containing the details of the updated license. You will download this file to your License Manager PC and apply it there. After this, your License Manager PC will support the product instances provided by the upgrade.

If you want to move the license to another PC, then you will first need to deactivate the license on your current License Manager PC. After that, we will generate a new license key which you can use to activate the license on any other computer.
