Preparing Edge for Web Testing

Applies to TestComplete 14.92, last modified on September 16, 2021

TestComplete supports the Edge browser based on the Chromium engine. The legacy (non-Chromium) version of Edge is not supported.

Install SmartBear Test Extension

To create and run tests in Chromium-based Edge, you need to install the SmartBear Test Extension in it. The extension is copied to your computer by the TestComplete installer, but you need to enable it in the browser manually. For complete information on the steps, see About SmartBear Test Extension.

Prevent Edge From Running in the Background

If Edge is allowed to run as a background application in Windows, you need to disallow this:

  1. Click Start and then select Settings.

  2. Select Privacy.

  3. Select Background apps from the list on the left. You will see a list of applications that are allowed to run in the background.

  4. Turn off Edge in the list to prevent it from running in the background.

Toolbars

If you add or remove toolbars in Edge (such as Favorites), you need to restart Edge afterwards.

Additional Recommended Settings

We also recommend that you configure certain Edge settings as described below. Although these settings are not necessarily required for automated testing, using them will prevent unexpected browser behavior and improve Edge performance during test runs.

  1. Select Settings from Edge main menu.

  2. Click View advanced settings.

  3. On the Advanced settings page:

    • If your tested web application uses HTML pop-ups, then make sure that the Block pop-ups option is disabled (Off).
