Unable to Activate the Trial License

Applies to TestComplete 15.70, last modified on December 17, 2024

This page refers to key-based licenses — a legacy license type used in TestComplete until version 15.48. For information on the current, ID-based license type, see SmartBear ID-based Licenses.

All TestComplete licenses, including the Trial licenses, must be activated before using them. If TestComplete fails to activate your Trial license, it will display an error message indicating that your license data is invalid.

The most likely, the reason for this is that you renamed the TestComplete installation package downloaded from the SmartBear website. The Trial license data is encoded in the file name. Renaming breaks it. That is why the installation notes ask users not to rename the downloaded installation package.

To solve the problem, simply request another Trial license. You can do this by clicking the appropriate button in the message window, or by repeating the download from the SmartBear website.
