Authenticode Operations

The Authenticode category holds operations that let you sign and verify applications signed using the Microsoft Authenticode technology. The Authenticode technology allows developers to include information about themselves and their code into applications through the use of digital certificates. Signing an application serves to ensure the end users that the application they obtain was really created by a definite developer, does not contain any unsafe code and was not modified during the download. Authenticode lets end users decide for themselves whether to accept or reject software components posted on the Internet before downloading begins. The Authenticode category includes the following operations:

Operation Description
Certificate Manager Manipulates the certificates, certificate trust lists and certificate revocation lists.
Check Signed File Validity (ChkTrust) Verifies a signed file using the ChkTrust utility.
Check Signed File Validity (SignTool) Verifies a signed file using the SignTool utility.
Create Personal Information Exchange File Creates a PFX-file that holds private keys and software publishing certificates.
Create Software Publishing Certificate Creates a sample software publishing certificate.
Create X.509 Certificate Creates a sample X.509 certificate.
Make Certificate Trust List Creates a certificate trust list.
Set Registry Keys Values Defines values of the registry keys that control the verification process.
Signing Code (SignCode) Signs a file with a software publishing certificate using the SignCode utility.
Signing Code (SignTool) Signs a file with a software publishing certificate using the SignTool utility.
Time Stamping Files Adds or updates the signed certificate’s time stamp.
