In the License Activation wizard, you specify the information needed to activate your TestExecute license. This topic provides basic information on license activation and describes the wizard’s pages.
License Activation - Basic Concepts
When activating a license, the License Manager utility exchanges data with the SmartBear web site (the URLs are http://ls1.smartbear.com and http://ls2.smartbear.com, port 443). That is, the activation requires that you have a functioning Internet connection on current computer or on another computer in your network.
The License Manager sends your activation information (the user name, company name, license key and information about your computer’s hardware) to the SmartBear web site. The web site processes this information and generates activation data for your computer. This data is stored on your computer and indicates that the license is activated.
After activating a license, the computer where the activation has been performed automatically becomes the License Manager PC for this license. Every time a TestExecute instance is launched, it connects to the License Manager PC and requests a permission for the run (see the image above).
There are two types of license activation: automatic and manual. You can select them on the first page of the License Activation wizard (see below):
Automatic activation means that the License Manager exchanges data with the SmartBear web site automatically. All you have to do is to specify the activation information in the wizard.
This activation type is recommended. You may choose it if your computer has a functioning Internet connection. For more information on automatic activation steps, see below.
Manual activation implies that you exchange data with the SmartBear web site manually. You may select it if the computer where you are activating the license does not have an Internet connection. For instance, this can be a computer that is not connected to the Internet for security reasons. For more information on manual activation steps, see below.
Below, are important notes on license activation and management:
TestExecute licenses need to be activated on one computer only. This computer will then become the License Manager PC, that is, it will control license usage. There is no need to activate the license on every workstation where the product instances will run.
After the activation succeeds, the license becomes computer-“bound”. If you want to uninstall the license and move it to another computer, you will have to deactivate the license on your computer first.
Activation consumes the license key. That is, after you have activated the license on your computer, you cannot use this key to activate the license on another computer. You have to use a new key. SmartBear generates this key automatically after you deactivate the license.
The computer where you activate the license must be a physical PC. License activation on virtual machines is not supported.
This does not mean that you cannot run TestExecute on virtual PCs. You can activate the license on a physical computer and use virtual machines as workstations to run TestExecute instances.

Automatic Activation Steps
Automatic activation is recommended. You can choose it if your computer has a working Internet connection.
Step 1 - Specify activation data
In this step, you specify the information needed for license activation: the user name, company name, e-mail and the license key.
You can specify your user name, company and e-mail (that is, these values may differ from the name, company and e-mail of the license holder).
You can find the license key in the e-mail message that we send you after you request the license. Also, you can find it on the TestExecute 10 page of the My SmartBear section of our web site (https://my.smartbear.com).
We recommend that you copy the license key from the e-mail or from the TestExecute page and paste it to the edit box of the License Activation wizard. This will guarantee that you specify the correct string.
Step 2 - Specify proxy settings (if needed)
Quite often, computers in offices connect to the Internet via a proxy server, not directly. Depending on its type, the proxy server may or may not require special authentication for connection. In this step, you can choose your proxy type and specify the proxy user name and password, if needed. Most proxies do not require authentication, so, most likely, you do not have to specify anything on the page. If you are not aware of your proxy type or do not know which user name and password to specify, ask your system administrator.
To start activating the license, click Activate.
Step 3 - License activation is in progress
In this step, the License Manager exchanges data with the SmartBear web site. The License Activation wizard displays a progress bar and notification message about this.
Step 4 - Final Step
This step is final. The License Activation wizard uses it to inform you that the license has been activated successfully.
Manual Activation Steps
You choose manual activation, if your computer is not connected to the Internet for some reason. This type of activation implies that you exchange data with the SmartBear web site manually. To do this, you need to find a computer connected to the Internet. This computer will be an intermediary between your computer and the SmartBear web site. You will pass files from your PC to the intermediate computer an then to the SmartBear web site and backward, from the site to the intermediate computer and then to your PC.
The intermediate computer must have access to the My SmartBear section of our web site (https://my.smartbear.com). Please check that the firewalls and proxies working on your network allows access to this web site.
Step 1 - Learn about the manual activation procedure
In this step, the wizard describes the manual activation procedure for you.
Step 2 - Collect information about your computer
To generate activation data, we need to know information about your computer’s hardware. The License Activation wizard collects this information automatically. In this step, you specify the name of the file that will store this information. You will then upload this file to the SmartBear web site.
Step 3 - Upload information about your computer to the SmartBear web site
In this step, you should upload the file with information on your computer’s hardware to the SmartBear web site and then obtain a file containing activation data from the web site:
Upload the file storing hardware information to the SmartBear web site. To do this:
Copy the file to the intermediate computer (that is, to the computer that has a functioning Internet connection).
On the intermediate computer, open the web page specified in the wizard.
Upload the file to the SmartBear web site by following the instructions on the web page.
After you upload the file, the web site will generate activation data for your computer and display a download link for the file containing this data.
Download the file to the intermediate computer and then copy it to your PC.
After you have downloaded and copied the file, click Next in the wizard to continue.
Step 4 - Apply activation data
In this step, you should apply the activation data to your computer. To do this, specify the file containing the activation data in the wizard’s edit box and click Next.
Step 5 - Final Step
This step is final. The License Activation wizard uses it to inform you that the license has been successfully activated.
If the activation fails, a message with a short description of the error will appear.
